The U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and three days later another one on Nagasaki. On August 12 the Japanese Emperor Hirohito announced to his cabinet and war council his intent to surrender rather than see his country and people laid waste. After a failed coup attempt by elements of the Japanese army to prevent the surrender, the intent to surrender was announced to the world on August 14. On August 17 all hostilities ended when the Emperor of Japan broadcast his capitulation bringing the Pacific war to an end. The official surrender document (Instrument of Surrender) was signed by Japanese dignitaries on September 2, 1945 aboard the Battleship USS Missouri.
