In 1871 the U.S. Army sent General William
Tecumseh Sherman to investigate conditions in Texas.
Sherman doubted that American Indians posed a
serious threat in Texas. In May some 100 Kiowas and
Comanches led by Big Tree, Satank, and Satanta
attacked a wagon train near Salt Creek, killing seven
men. A Survivor of this Salt Creek Raid reported the
raid to Sherman.
