Many things happened in Berlin in that year, but the most important was the Berlin Airlift. For more context see below.

In 1949 and 1950, West Berlin, which was an enclave within East Germany that belonged to West Germany, was blockaded by East German and Soviet forces. This required the United States to bring in all supplies to Berlin via airplane. This act was sustained for the better part of two years until the East Germans and Soviets relented and allowed the shipment of goods by land transport as the arrangement had previously been. This period when all goods came in by airplane was called the Berlin Airlift.
