If the question is referring to the TWO Battles of the Philippines: the US Army under General MacArthur, and later General Wainwright, surrendered the Philippines to Japanese Forces in 1942. MacArthur had been evacuated, under the US President's orders, to Australia; Wainwright remained to become a POW, along with the US/Allied Forces. The last Battle of the Philippines was in 1944, in which the Philippines were liberated by the allied forces; and GEN Douglas MacArthur, kept his word, "...I shall return."
