Survivors of life- threatening events may develop this illness, which tends to be more severe the less it was anticipated. Some victims rexpierience the traumatic events through nightmares and flashbacks. Others numb themselves emotionally, startle easily, and experience anxiety attacks, insomnia, poor memory, difficulty concentrating, and feel guilty about their survival. Some life events may make one more susceptible to depression and anxiety. Veterans with this syndrome live paranoid lives. Treatments for this illness are still being explored and vary.
