Rommel did not surrender. His army in North Africa, after repeatedly winning battles agains the British, was not able persuade Hitler to provide him with requested war materiel after Germany launched its war against the Soviet Union in 1941. As a result, the British were able to push his forces back into Libya and Tunisia where he had to fight off the Americans coming in from Algeria as well as the British. He was recalled back to Germany before the fighting in Africa was over.

His next assignment was to prepare the "Western Wall" against the expected Allied D-Day invasion. In 1944, He was wounded by an enemy aircraft while riding in a car. After spending some time in a hospital he was implicated in the plot to assassinate Hitler and was arrested and shot.
