1st AnswerNothing much. Trade was little or none and very few people traveled any where. To go someplace it took days since people had to walk or go by horse/wagons. An example, if a person went 30 miles by horse it would take about 3 days so a total of 6 days up and back. So, a trip to a city 30 miles away took about 2 weeks total because of the travel time and the time to do business in the city. Most people didn't leave the area where they were born. When Rome fell in 410 AD trade stopped. The Romans traded with everyone, but as chaos took over and trade routes dried up so did getting goods from other places. For a 1000 years the world was small and shrunken. 2nd AnswerThere were a number of things that increased trade and travel in the Middle Ages. Among them were the following:
  • End of the Age of Migrations, as the tribes settled down, established kingdoms, and began to rule with the idea that they owned the land and had to protect it
  • Pilgrimages, which were mostly to the Holy Land and for only the wealthy at first, but later were to places like Canterbury, only a couple days walk from London and a fine vacation for the working poor.
  • The Crusades
  • The opening of the Silk Road to China
  • Increased trade within Europe, leading to increased demand for better transportation facilities
  • Improved roads due to improved demand and protection from such organizations as the Knights Templar
  • Larger nations with larger political associations, such as the Carolingian Empire, the Holy Roman Empire, and the rather extensive lands ruled by or associated with King Henry II of England, which included England, Wales, parts of Ireland, most of France, parts of southern Italy, and the Kingdom of Jerusalem
  • Associations of guilds, which banded together for trade purposes, as in the example of the Hanseatic League
  • During the period of the Knights Templar, the international monetary transfers they could offer
  • After the period of the Knights Templar, international baking
