What invention advanced the life in the Middle Ages the most?

There were a lot of inventions in the Middle Ages that profoundly influenced the lives of people. The one most people might pick as the most important is the printing press. There were others we might look at, however, and one of my favorites is the chimney, which was invented in the 11th century and made real fireplaces possible for the first time in history. Prior to that invention, the fire was on a hearth or brazier, in the middle of the floor. The horse collar is another that increased agricultural production; it and other agricultural inventions made the population of Europe much greater at the end of the Middle Ages than it had ever been during the Roman Empire.

I think my favorite medieval invention is the chimney, which made it possible to have a fireplace. Prior to having chimneys, poor people built fires in the middles of their dirt floors, and wealthy people had fires on braziers, in the middles of rooms. The smoke went out a hole in the wall or roof, and the air was smokey. The introduction of the fireplace meant that for the first time in history, people could be cozy. Well almost.

Most people would pick the invention of the printing press as one of the most important in history.
