It might be said that the United States is a nation of immigrants because for 400-years people from all over the world have come to America looking to start a new life. They came for many different reasons including escaping war-torn countries, freedom of religion, to escape poverty, and others just for a change of scenery.
America since, as discovered by Christopher Columbus who called it Indies, as revealed in his book A NEW WORLD REVEALED, has been a country of immigrants who brought cultural diversity, new traditions, languages, knowledge experience etc. etc. from their respective countries to develop America into a strong Nation.
The big picture is that the early immigrants came searching for a better life. The native people were frightened, thinking that the immigrants would take their jobs and eventually bring the downfall of the nation. - Andrew

Because we're an ISLAND NATION ! There is LIMITED space on these islands - we CANNOT just keep letting 'immigrants' come here without restrictions ! There is ALREADY a shortage of housing - without the added burden of providing properties for so-called immigrants to live in ! There are MANY other countries 'immigrants' could settle in - the ONLY reason they head for the UK - is our WELFARE system !
