Christopher Columbus as he is known in English, was born in Genoa, Italy, as Cristoforo Colombo. He is most famous for increasing awareness of the existence of the Americas and increasing contact between Europeans and Native Americans. North America had been visited before him, most notably by Norseman Leif Ericson 500 years prior.

In his first voyage to the Americas, he made first contact on one of the Bahamas. The exact Island is not known. This was on October 12, 1492.
