The Roman Republic was formed when the Roman monarchy, which lasted for 244 years, was abolished. Originally this republic, which lasted for 482 years, covered the city of Rome and its nearby region. Much of Rome's imperial expansion occurred during this period. During the republican period Rome gained control over all the areas around the Mediterranean Sea and of Gaul. The Roman Republic then fell and was followed by 503 years of absolute rule by emperors.
The Roman Republic was not ruled by an assembly of Roman citizens. Politics was controlled by the senate which was an unelected body composed of aristocrats and rich commoners. It represented the interests if the aristocracy and opposed reforms aimed at improving the situation of the poor. Effectively, the Roman Republic was an oligarchy, even though it had popular assemblies. There were three popular assemblies, not one: the Assembly of Soldiers, the Assembly of the Tribes, which gathered all citizens, and the Plebeian Council, which gathered all the plebeians (commoners).
The Tribal Assembly in the early Roman Republic was the democratic assembly of Roman citizens that dealt with the judicial, executive, and legislative matters. It used a form of direct democracy based on citizens, instead of electors, casting votes on matters under a magistrate for their own tribe.

During the Monarchy and the Republic, the plebeians, like all Roman citizens, had the had the right to vote in the assembly of the tribes, which was a popular assembly. In the late Monarchy and early to mid-Republic, if they had a level property above a certain threshold, they could also vote in the assembly of the soldiers. During the Republic, the plebeians also formed their own assembly, the plebeian council. Originally they voted in this council only on matters regarding the plebeians. Over time, this assembly became the main voting body to approve or reject most laws, including laws which were binding on all Roman citizens, including the patricians.
