As the Europeans were interested in trading with East Asia (also called the "Far East") and India, they labeled the region in between them and that area the "Middle East" as it was between the West (Europe) and the Far East. As Europeans were never concerned anywhere near as concerned with further westward, northward, or southward travel, there was never any desire or intent to name any regions as "Middle West", "Middle North", and "Middle South". It is curious to note, however, that as Americans moved further west, they began to call what were formerly the Northwest Territories the "Midwest" in recognition of the fact that it was in the middle of the East Coast and the Pacific Northwest.
