What is the goodness of war?

War, along with disease and famine, are the only things that prevent overpopulation as the human race has proved time and time again that it is incapable of controlling its population. There also have been technical benefits to the human race which resulted either directly or indirectly from war, but I doubt anyone will argue that these benefits were worth the cost. War has also brought people together and thus created new life (war babies) who would not have lived otherwise. World War 2 brought the world out of the Great Depression. The war between the Byzantines and the Ottoman Turks sparked the Renaissance, and the war between Christian Europe and Islamic North Africa led to the Age of Exploration. There are many other examples of goodness which has come from war, but the goodness of war is something which is much more difficult to clarify.
