Also known as "Baby Flat-Tops" or "Jeep Carriers", the Escort Carrier USS Block Island (CVE-21) was sunk in the Atlantic. She was crippled, then finally sunk by her escort vessels.

"Baby Flat-Tops" were built upon cargo ship hulls. They were not designed for "fleet actions" in the Pacific, but for resupply (reinforcement) ships (ferrying airplanes), but proved successful working as warships in Atlantic waters.

What was the major weakness of Mussolini's navy?

The major flaw or the weakness of the navy Mussolini built was the lack of an aircraft carrier. He believed that for operations in the Mediterranean Sea, his submarine fleet and land based aircraft would make up for the lack of an aircraft carrier. This was a major mistake if his plan was to dominate the Mediterranean Sea.

Did the pilots during World War 2 that flew off the navy carriers fall under the army air corp or where they navy?

US Navy Aircraft Carriers normally operated US Navy aircraft flown by US Navy pilots; however sometimes during WW2 these aircraft carriers had US Army Air Force or US Marine Corps aircraft on-board to be flown-off by Army or Marine pilots. This was for ferrying operations. These aircraft would take off from the carriers but land on an airfield. Army pilots were not trained to land on carriers, neither were the Army aircraft equipped for carrier landings. US Marine pilots & Marine aircraft could operate from carriers if necessary, until they could be established at an airfield.

What does the R stand for on a aircraft carrier?

The "R" on an aircraft carrier stands for "Repair." It designates the ship's capability to conduct maintenance and repairs on aircraft. This designation is part of a classification system used by the U.S. Navy to indicate the ship's primary function and support capabilities.
