The former slaves who served in the army did not receive the land promised by General Sherman due to a combination of political and social factors. After the Civil War, President Andrew Johnson reversed Sherman's Special Field Order No. 15, which had allocated land to freed slaves. This decision, influenced by Southern interests and the desire to restore the antebellum social order, left many former soldiers without the promised land and economic opportunity. As a result, the hopes of these veterans for land ownership and independence were largely unfulfilled.
