What is the relevance today of the Cold War?

Dominating the latter half of the 20th century until generally dissipating with the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, the Cold War remains relevant today in several ways. For one thing, its importance in the post-World War II era can still be studied with care for the sake of understanding that period of World History. For another thing, the continuing tension between 'capitalist' and 'communist' ideas and advocates in the world, along with the continued presence of nuclear weaponry, can be informed by drawing lessons from the Cold War period.
