Paul Revere was looking for a signal from the steeple of Boston's Old North Church. The church keeper would hang one lantern if the British were due to come by land, and two if they were coming by sea. When Revere saw the two lanterns in the steeple on April 18, 1775, he knew it was time to begin what would become his famous "midnight ride".
