Technically the western Roman Empire collapsed when Odoacer conquered it and became the first "barbarian" king of Italy in 476. However it had been going downhill for roughly over a hundred years. There were several factors all coming together which contributed to the fall of Rome. Some of them were lack of leadership, lack of military strength (and military leadership) pressure on the borders, lack of new sources of income thereby contributing to a weakened economy, and domestic unrest between the Christian sects and the remnants of the pagans.

Which empire led rome at the time of its conquest?

There was not an empire which led Rome and there was not a conquest of Rome. Rome had an empire: the Roman Empire. Although the invasions by the Germanic peoples led to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire, the city of Rome was never conquered. Ancient Rome was sacked by the Visigoths in 410 and by the Vandals in 455, but it was not conquered. Both Visigoths and Vandals withdrew after the sack. They did so before units of the Roman army from elsewhere in the Roman Empire would catch up with them.

Why did the roman empire split into the western roman empire and the eastern roman empire?

The Roman Empire split into the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire primarily due to administrative and logistical challenges in governing its vast territories. By the late 3rd century AD, Emperor Diocletian enacted reforms that divided the empire into smaller, more manageable regions, a process further solidified by Constantine the Great, who established Constantinople as the capital of the Eastern Empire. This division allowed for more localized governance but ultimately led to divergent political, cultural, and economic developments, culminating in the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD while the Eastern Empire, or Byzantine Empire, continued for nearly another thousand years.
