The US Civil War battle of Kernstown was a defeat for Confederate General Stonewall Jackson. Jackson had received a report from his cavalry commander that Union forces had retreated from Kernstown and had left only a small force behind. The report was not true and most of the Union forces remained near the town. Jackson sent a force to take over the town. There the Union soldiers surprised the Confederates and counter attacked. This forced Confederate commander Richard Garnett to retreat. This would be one of the rare losses for Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley.
