Harriet Brooks overcame one of the greatest challenges in her time: she became a woman scientist in Ontario, Canada in a time where many people thought women shouldn't be allowed to study in universities. She earned a degree from McGill University and later a Master's degree in physics. She did research on nuclear transmutations and a series of experiments to determine the nature of radioactive emissions from thorium, which served as a foundation for the development of nuclear science. She studied under Marie Curie, the first peron to win 2 Nobel Prizes. She also discovered the recoil of the radioactive atom and identified "emanation", the radon and tried to determine its Atomic Mass.
