By late 7th Century BCE Judaism was being centralised in the temple in Jerusalem in an attempt to sideline the 'many gods in his house' of Solomon, in order to impose a dominant god Yahweh (Jehovah) and sideline the gods in 'high places' ie the hill shrines of Astarte who had been Yahweh's wife and others. This 'no other gods before me' of the First Commandment was a clear call for dominance, and the best way to establish this primacy was to keep the religion centralised under control of the king of Judah in his capital (control of the 10 northern tribes had already been lost with the Assyrian capture of the 10 northern tribes, leaving only Judah and Benjamin). While other religions kept their many gods, each with a specific function, Judaism evolved to a dominant god to cover all aspects of life in an age before scientific knowledge, when natural events were ascribed to god(s).

After Babylon captured Judah and deported the upper class to Babylon, many were later allowed to return when Persia took over Babylon, and the returnees brought back with them from Babylon the idea of an afterlife, which expanded the scope of some sects of Judaism.

Romans allowed the practice of other religions as long as people?

The Romans were tolerant of others' religions as long as those religions or beliefs did not provoke dissent or preach treason. This became a problem during the rise of Christianity, as any religion other than the religion of the Roman state was deemed treasonous to Caesar.

Are jews Christian?

NO. The core message of Christianity is: "God made Himself incarnate through His Son, the Messiah, who sacrificed Himself on Earth as atonement for all of humanity's sins." None of that has anything to do with Judaism.God, in Judaism, does not take physical form or self-incarnate. The human sacrifice of Jesus and communion is at fundamental odds with the Torah's prohibition on Human Sacrifice, its prohibition of blood consumption, its prohibition on cannibalism, and its prohibition on expiation for another's sins. There is no verse in the Old Testament that explains that one of the purposes of the Messiah is to die for sin at all (never mind for the sins of other people), even though there are numerous explicit requirements that Jews point to the Messiah needing to perform. (See Related Question: How does the Old Testament understand the messiah?) The Jewish Messiah is to be an Earthly King. As a result, a person claiming to be God himself is instantly recognized as not being the Messiah in Judaism.

What different about the Jewish religion?

Abraham, founder of Judaism, was surrounded by various Pagan cults and religions, all of which were Polytheistic - they worshiped an array of deities. Judaism was a radical departure from this. Abraham made an eternal covenant with the Gd of Israel in which he vowed to stay true to this, the true Gd. In return, Gd would protect Abraham and all of his decedents. Judaism was the first organised faith to advocate pure Monotheism, then. This made it totally different from the religions and cults that surrounded the early Israelites.

What made judaism different from other religions in the world in what way did this change future religions?

Other religions were Pagan faiths - members worshipped a whole array of deities.Judaism taught the idea of 'ethical monotheism' - the idea that there is ONE G-d and only one G-d.Judaism introduced a basic moral framework; Torah for Jews, and the seven Noahide Laws for Gentiles.Judaism also stated, right from the start, that all humans are equally G-d's children, whether Jewish or Gentile.Judaism had a massive impact on both Christianity and Islam. Christianity borrowed some aspects of Judaism, but then claimed that Jesus created them, which simply isn't true. The concept of 'maschiach' (messiah) originated IN Judaism. Christianity took this concept, REvised it and then applied it to Jesus.Islam was also affected by Judaism. The founder of the faith, Mohammed, mixed with many Jews and absorbed tenets of their religion. But when he tried to get the Jews to join his new faith, they refused - so Mohammed had them slaughtered. He took several aspects of Judaism and incorporated them into Islam. Despite this, all three Abrahamic faiths are profoundly different.
