Even though there was little concern about Kuwait itself - when one corrupt Dictatorship takes over another corrupt dictatorship, little has been lost - the concern was that if Saddam can take over Kuwait and get away with it, what other countries would he try to take over next? How far did his ambitions extend? It is worth noting that at the time, Saddam said that the reason why he invaded Kuwait was to liberate Palestine, which means that he was building an empire with which eventually to attack Israel, and that would have been a much more destructive conflict. And even that would not necessarily have been the end of his conquests.

In a more practical sense, controlling Kuwait, and potentially other oil-producing countries in the Middle East, would have enabled Saddam to exert influence on the major countries dependent on Middle Eastern oil.

The mission of the United Nations is to prevent war, and every nation that joins the UN signs the UN charter and agrees not to invade other nations except as authorized by the UN Security Council. Iraq violated that agreement. Kuwait was not that important in itself, as a small, corrupt monarchy. However it creates a bad precedent if Iraq is allowed to invade and take over a neighboring nation. If Iraq is allowed to take over Kuwait, then perhaps Iraq will also find other nations to invade and take over. Perhaps Iraq has plans to take over the entire middle east, and who knows, perhaps Europe is next. We have already seen this kind of thing in WW II. It is better to stop such things early. The larger an expanding empire becomes, the harder it is to stop its continued expansion.
