At the Constitutional Convention in 1787, delegates drafted the United States Constitution. This document established the framework for the federal government, outlining the separation of powers among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. It also included provisions for checks and balances, as well as the Bill of Rights, which was later added to safeguard individual liberties. The Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation, creating a stronger national government.

The document drafted by the new nation was the Constitution of the United States, created in 1787. It established the framework for the federal government, delineating the powers of its three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. The Constitution also included a Bill of Rights, ratified in 1791, which guaranteed essential liberties and protections for individuals. This foundational document has guided American governance and law for over two centuries.
The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 decided how the United States would add new territory and eventually new states to the Union.
The convention in Philadelphia, at which the Constitution was written, began on 25 May 1787. In September, a committee was assigned to write the final document. On September 17, 1787, forty-two of the 55 delegates to the Constitutional Convention held their final meeting. It was signed on Monday, 17 September 1787. Gouverneur Morris of Pennsylvania was put in charge of the committee to draft the final copy of the United States Constitution. The other men who had much to do with writing the new Constitution included John Dickinson, Edmund Randolph, Roger Sherman, James Wilson, and George Wythe. Morris was given the task of putting all the convention's resolutions and decisions into polished form. Morris actually "wrote" the Constitution. The original copy of the document is preserved in the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. Jacob Shallus, assistant clerk of the Pennsylvania State Assemble, was given the task of engrossing the Constitution prior to the signing of the document. His office was in the same building in which the Convention was held.
The meeting in 1787 was to revise the Articles of Confederation. Many leaders felt that the Articles of Confederation were too weak and needed to be changed.
