Puerto Rico is not now nor has it ever been a recognized country. Puerto Rico is a semi-autonomous territory of the United States of America with "Commonwealth Status". This is a political distinction, but a fancy name for an unincorporated territory. Before 1898 Puerto Rico was a territory of Spain. Before 1493 it was an island inhabited by Taino indians. And before that, not one alive knows!

The United States of America has 5 major territories. Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

The United States has very close relationships with some countries that were former territories and granted independence from the United States such as The Solomon Islands (1978), The Republic of the Marshall Islands (1986).
