Italy has almost as many political parties as weeks in the year. It is however basically bi-partisan.
The main problem is that when either the left or the right get in the central majority has to align itself with the extremse either on the left to very marxist communist parties or on the right to very strong extreme right northern parties.
Thsi means they only survive with the support of these extremes and most legislation is adjusted to suit these extreme parties meaning in essence nothing much ever gets done.
The alternative is that the extreme party pulls out of the co-alition and a new election is then called.
There are very strong ties to the communist movement, the church also plays a large roll in deteremining how people vote and the federal movements and indipendance for the north also play a big part.
