If the accused died during the investigation phase, it would not necessarily halt the investigation until it was proven that the accused acted alone in their crime. If the accused died during trial, it would end the trial.
In this landmark decision, the Supreme Court heard several cases in which suspects signed confessions without being informed that they were not legally required to do so. The Court ruled that the Fifth Amendment guarantee against self-incrimination meant the accused must be warned of the right to remain silent and the right to have a lawyer present during questioning.
