Germany did not occupy Slovakia during World War II; rather, Slovakia was a client state allied with Nazi Germany. Following the disintegration of Czechoslovakia in March 1939, Slovakia declared independence with German support. Although it maintained a degree of autonomy, the Slovak government was heavily influenced by and collaborated with the Nazis throughout the war.

Slovakia, as part of Czechoslovakia, did not exist as an independent entity during World War I; it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The war began in 1914, and Czechoslovakia sought independence from Austro-Hungary during this time. CzechoslovakLegions, composed of Czech and Slovak volunteers, fought alongside the Allies. Czechoslovakia officially became an independent state on October 28, 1918, after the war ended.
