Who was Erwin Rommel?Erwin Rommel (15 Novemver 1891 - 14 October 1944) was a German general who rose to fame as commander of the Axis forces fighting the British in North Africa (1941-43). A clever tactician who used his numerically inferior forces to such great advantage that his reputation became a threat to Allied morale. Finally overwhelmed by superior numbers, he returned to Europe where he was put in charge of organising the defence of the French coast (so-called "Atlantic Wall") prior to the Normandy landings in June 1944. Badly wounded by an air attack on his staff car, he returned to Germany. Implicated in the July (1944) plot to assassinate Hitler but was so popular that he was not put on trial. Instead was given the option of committing suicide which he took in order that his family would not be harmed. Buried with full military honours (it was said that he had died of his wounds). His son later became Mayor of Stuttgart in post-war Germany.
