Slaves, due to limited educational opportunities and racial prejeduces that persisted well into the 1940s, mostly found unskilled labor, farming, and a few specialized service jobs were available (Masonry, leatherworking, blacksmithing, brickmaking, etc. Mostly referred to a Trade Skills.) During Jim Crow laws and the rise of share cropping many blacks in America left agriculture and turned to urban work including factory work and maintenance. Racial resistance ensued and many found only menial labor avaialble (janitors, garbage collectors, etc.)

Between the 1940s and 1970s the entertainment industry became more opened and allowed American blacks limited but growing access to singing, musicians, and sports. A classic example was Sammy Davis Jr. while performing with Frank Sinatra was once asked to use a side door. Sinatra raised high holy hell and Davis was allowed to enter using the main doors. Not even 10 years prior in some establishments a black male wouldn't even be allowed in the building.

The descendants of former slaves, each generation have made progress in normalizing into the American job market but with the rise of a global work force there is concerns that this may disrupt the full integration of minorities into the job market as jobs, domestically accessable to minority groups still struggling, are being outsourced and pose a threat and not providing crucial steps in progressing to parity with dominate cultural\racial groups. Post 1990 conditions continue to improve and with the election of Barack Obama, many see his election as a final victory in gaining equality.

After the US Civil War, former slaves in the South achieved significant progress. In 1865 less than 10% of Southern Blacks were literate. Five years later the rate rose to 17%. Not long after, in 1890 55% was the literacy rate . This was far above former slaves who lived in former colonies of European nations.
