When moving camp in search of herds of game animals, Plains people walked or rode horses; horses were also used as pack animals and for hauling "travois" which were an arrangement of tipi poles tied to the horse's shoulders and with the ends dragging on the ground behind. By tying crosspieces to the poles a framework was produced that could carry food, tipi covers, clothing, bundles of hides, small children or sick or old people.

When crossing large rivers such as the Missouri, the Plains tribes would swim while holding on to the mains of their horses, or they made simple rafts of driftwood to transport belongings and children across, pulled by swimmers.
