The first settlement was Jamestown settled in 1604 when 104 men came to Virginia. They were sent by the East India Company as an investment. Instead of planting crops and picking a site that was in a good area for building they built a fort on marshy land on the James River. They came to seek gold and to find riches, but within the first 6 months sickness took all of the men but 36. They also settled in an Native American nation of 14,000 people. Since the area they picked was not good land they were allowed by the native population to stay. They starved because of the lack of food, disease, and bad water. Later, the colony will be saved because John Rolfe brought tobacco for planting and the colony became successful.
