2 things really: The vastness of the country....& the winter climate. As long as the Germans were on the offensive they were going to win the war against the Russians......... so they laid siege to Leningrad for the better part of 3 years..... They didnt quite get to Moscow... and they were defeated and counter attacked at Stalingrad..... A very bitter & vastly expensive war indeed, and many many atrocities (On both sides) that went largely unnoticed. One must think that Hitler didn't trust Joe Stalin.... & that was mutual & History shows both were right !
