He joined the Naval Reserve as an officer in 1942, while still a Congressman. He was assigned to inspect shipyards in Texas and on the West Coast.
Later, he went to the South Pacific, reporting to General MacArthur in Australia, to report on conditions in the South Pacific Theater to General MacArthur and President Roosevelt.
He went on a bombing mission, in a B-24 Liberator, but it developed a mechanical problem and had to turn back before reaching the target or seeing any enemy fighters.
Some of the other bombers on that mission came under heavy fire about the same time his plane was landing again, so MacArthur awarded Johnson a Silver Star.
