During this time America was still heavily feeling the effects of the Great Depression and the larger depressed global economy so it's policy was naturally isolationist. As a result, the US cared little about the foreign affairs of Europe, which was regarded as far away and largly non-important to American well-being. However, just as Europe was, the United States was very anti-war, seeking to prevent the outbreak of a war equal to or greater than the First World War, so America endorsed a policy of appeasement for Hitler; which, involved allowing Germany to "reconquer" lands that were considered ethnically and historically German.
