Grunts originated in Vietnam...they were infantrymen (foot soldiers). They called themselves "grunts" because they grunted everytime they had to stand up (from resting) and begin drudging up the hills or through the jungles again and again. Carrying lots of weight through mud, vegetation, up hillls, etc. etc. etc. etc. causes a man to GRUNT!

In WWI they were called "doughboys."

In WWII they were called "dog-faces." (Possibly because of the dog-tag and un-shaved faces).
