The Americans discovered just how badly their regular forces and militia had been maintained. They sent several armies into Canada to forcibly annex the country, but those armies were stopped in their tracks by a considerably smaller defensive force of 5200 British regulars, and about three times as many natives and Canadian militia.

It came as a shock to the British and Canadians, too. As hostilities became more likely prior to the American invasion, Canadians were aware that they were outnumbered in population by almost 20 to 1.

In Upper Canada (Ontario) the commander, Sir Isaac Brock, worried about the fact that most settlers, and therefore most of his militia, were American born. He was so worried, in fact, that he was reluctant to hand out guns to his militia because he wasn't certain which way they might be pointed. Their performance in turning back the invasion showed that he had nothing to worry about.
