in World War 1 submarines were used to blow up merchant ships. they were mainly used by Germany and would blow up any of britans allies. because of the blowing up of the lusitania and other ships the convoy system was invented that included a mass number of ships escorting one merchant ship. subs were called u-boats and would launch torpedoes. they trespassed the Atlantic in an illegal way overiding the monroe doctrine which angered the u.s. which would soon itself enter the war.
