The Cold War started with the announcement of the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan. Britain ground to a halt amid the century's worst winter, rushed theough Indian independence and announced her forthcoming withdrawal from Palestine. Communists were dropped from the French and Italian governments and the Soviets reciprocated by securing Communist Party rule in Hungary and Bulgaria. Spain became a kingdom again, but without a king until 1975. Biting cold gave way to a summer of drought in eastern Europe. Christian Dior unveiled the "New Look", restoring French pre-eminence in fashion after years of austerity. The British stuck with austerity but nationalised their coal mines a few weeks before the snow stopped anyone getting to the coal mines.
