The Civil War battle at Antietam, Maryland in 1862 fits this description quite well. The southern army moved against Washington in an attempt to topple the Lincoln government. The Union army intercepted the southerners and initiated a large battle near the town of Sharpsburg. The Confederates held, gave up a little ground, held again, nearly broke, and finally counterattacked when another corps arrived. Although they inflicted great damage on the Union army, the Union refused to give up ground. The Army of Northern Virginia exhausted its resources and moved back across the Potomac. The Union suffered 12,000 casualties (over 2,000 dead) and the Confederacy had 10,000 casualties (over 1,500 dead). 22,700 total casualties in one day is a sad record.

The amount of ground gained can vary significantly depending on the context, such as military operations, political movements, or personal goals. In military terms, ground gained refers to territory captured or controlled during conflicts, often measured in square kilometers or specific locations. In other contexts, it may refer to progress made towards objectives or advancements in negotiations. For a precise answer, specific details about the situation in question would be necessary.
