When the Second World War ended, Germany was organized into four occupation zones, each under the control of: United States, Great Britain, France & the Soviet Union. The Americans, British, & French allowed their zones to be a single nation, known as West Germany.

Stalin's Soviet Union prevented the unification of Germany by keeping its eastern occupation zone under communist control and separate from West Germany. It's zone became East Germany.
