The last large battle of the Civil War was fought at Appomattox Courthouse. Ssurrender April 9, 1865 was followed, on April 12, 1865 by formal disbandment of the Army of Northern Virginia and the parole of its officers and men, effectively ending the war in Virginia.

However, communication in those days were flawed. General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered his army April 26, at Bennett Place, near Durham NC.; Lieutenant General Richard Taylor surrendered the last remaining sizable Rebel force east of the Mississippi at Demopolis, Alabama on May 8, 1865.

Ironically, the last battle Palmito Ranch, Texas, May 12-13, 1865, resulted in a Confederate victory. However, when word reached General Edmund Kirby Smith he surrendered his Confederate army of the Trans-Mississippi later that month.

Another footnote to Civil War history is the surrender of CSS Shenandoah, which was in the North Pacific when Lieutenant James Waddell learned on August 2, 1865 of General Lee's surrender.

Evading American warships, Waddell steered a course around Cape Horn and sailed for Liverpool, England. Arriving in the Mersey on November 6, 1865, Waddell surrendered the ship to the British authorities.
