He was on his way to Asia to look for goal. He took the western direction thinking it was quicker, then he came upon the carribean while saling through he found an island we now know as Jamaica. People already inhabited this island these people are known as the TIENOS of the amerindians, bout he thought it was Asia then enslaved these people to look for goal. There was no success bout he still enslaved them to build plantations. The Tienos were not used to such hard work and later died.

Who discovered Dominican Republic?

Christopher Columbus discovered the Island it occupies in 1492. Part of his crew stayed on the island and founded the city of Santo Domingo, its capital ,in 1493. The Dominican Republic originally gained its independence from Spain in 1821, but was occupied by Haiti until its second independence in 1844. In 1861, it became a protectorate of Spain until 1865, and once again, in 1916, it was occupied by U.S. forces until 1924. P.S. The name of the city is Santo Domingo, no matter what language you use. Any other spelling (i.e. San Domingo, Santa Domingo, etc.) is wrong.
