The document that transformed the thirteen colonies into the United States was the Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776. It proclaimed the colonies' separation from British rule and outlined the principles of individual rights and government by consent. This foundational text established the United States as a sovereign nation.
The southern colonies were settled by either the English, French or the Spanish. The deep south, from Florida to Louisiana were settled by the Spanish or French and going up the Atlantic coast from Georgia were mostly settled by the English. As a matter of fact Georgia is name for King George II, the king of England in the early 1700s.
Massachusetts got its name from the Massachusett tribe, a Native American group that inhabited the area before European colonization. The name is believed to mean "near the great hill," referring to the Blue Hills located south of Boston. When English settlers arrived in the early 17th century, they adopted the tribal name for the region. The state was established in 1788 as one of the original thirteen colonies.
