Due to the US victory over Spain in the 1898 Spanish American War, the peace treaty enabled the US to have Spain cede its possession of the Philippine Islands to the US. Looking back, it was a step for the US imperialists and gave the US a military base in East Asia. In 1941, Imperial Japan had already began its mission to create an empire in East Asia. This resulted in an invasion in the 1930's of China and other parts of Southeast Asia held by European powers. Japan believed that unless the US was ousted from the Philippines, its empire was threatened by the US owned Philippines. In December of 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and also began its battle to remove US forces from the Philippines. There remains a distinct possibility that Pearl Harbor may not have been a Japanese target if US forces were not occupying these islands. In a back handed manner, it can be debated that the US entered WW 2 based on its possession of the Philippines. It's clear that this is a debatable point.
