Things were desperate for the German army in the first week of December 1941. They had almost taken Moscow. However, Soviet counter attacks had destroyed any hope of taking the city and had put the whole of the German front in jeopardy. With Japan's attack on Pearl Harbour, Hitler hoped that his declaration of war on the USA, would encourage the Japanese to attack the soviets. His hope was that Soviet soldiers, including the Siberians, would be drawn away from the Eastern front to defend against a Japanese attack at the other end of the Soviet Union, hence taking pressure off the German Army. As soon as Htler made this decision he had lost the war. This was one of Hitler's worst decisions. Right up there with Dunkirk, delay in Yugoslavia, transfer of forces to Kiev, Stalingrad and Kursk. The Japanese had no intention of attacking the Soviet Union. Through secret intellegenge the allies new this. Hitler did not!
