Empress Maria Theresa had 16 children of who Marie Antoinette was the 15th.

Maria Theresa was not a tender loving mother, but a hard working Empress.

In that day, it was out of the question that a woman reigned a country, but Maria Theresa was the only surviving child of her parents (the former Emperor and empress of Austria's and decided to reign, even though her husband should have. She was tough to the bone. She was a very strict woman who saw her children (daughters) as political pawns and married them off one by one to important royal families abroad. She did never hug or kiss her children, and the care of them was done by governesses. She also did not see them very frequently because her work wouldn't leave her much time for that.

When married off, she did keep in touch with her daughters regularly by writing letters and kept being informed about them via their mentors. Marie Antoinette once admitted that she feared her mother more than she had loved her.
