It was the US Navy that commenced the conventional Vietnam War when a USN destroyer became engaged with a torpedo squadron belonging to the North Viet Navy in August 1964; its called the Tonkin Gulf Incident.

That same month USN fighter bombers attacked torpedo boat bases in North Vietnam.

The USMC are part of the USN. US Marines landed in South Vietnam in 1965 to protect US air bases stationed there. There security operations extended (escalated) into further protecting US assets in country by expanding (searching and destroying enemy forces) deeper and deeper into enemy held territory (deeper and deeper into I Corps aka Military Region 1 (MR1).

I Corps consists of famous names such as : Da Nang, Chu Lai, Quang Tri, Dong Ha, Khe Sanh, Highway 9 (aka QL9, Route 9), Lang Vei, Firebases Con Thien (renamed by the US Army Firebases A4 & C2 when they took over), the Rockpile and the DMZ. In those places the Marines tried to clear it of enemy presence; destroying them whenever and where ever they found them.

I Corps was the most dangerous place in South Vietnam. It was the AO (Area of Operations) of the NVA, being so close to their country...North Vietnam; it was easy to reinforce and be kept re-supplied. So the Marines got the job!
