Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech encouraged respect for all. There was a lot of racial discrimination and segregation of the Negros after the civil war. Martin Luther King was a symbol of freedom and equality for the nation. He believed that people should be judged based on their character and personality and not their race. He wanted respect for ALL Americans, and he also believed that jobs and opportunities should be available to everyone. He led a march of thousands upon thousands of people, in front of the Lincoln Memorial, and gave his "I Have a Dream" speech. He said, "Even though we still face difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream." This gave people hope and something to believe in. And two months after the speech, Congress passed a civil rights law, which prohibited discrimination against color, races and religion.
