The lack of clarity about where the actual border between Texas (and later the US) and Mexico was supposed to be. The Rio Grande del Norte and the Neuches were two different rivers and until reconciled by negotiation or deadly force of arms a vast "no mans land" existed. Texas had been a break away republic whose right to exist had never been approved, recognized or ratified by the Mexican Government.
