Books have been written on the "Causes of World War II" so I will only give a brief answer. Should you require further information you can contact me.

Causes: The Germans, Italians and Japanese all felt they needed more land. They felt they were overpopulated. In the case of Germany and Japan they also needed additional sources of raw materials for their industries.

Why did this result in a World War instead of a regional conflict? It was obvious that if the Axis nations got what they wanted they would be a major threat to the whole world. There seemed to be no end to the land they wanted. Hitler demanded the land Germany owned before WW I. That did not include Poland, so it was obvious there was not limit to his desires. In addition Germany owned possessions in Africa and in Asia, as well as the Pacific. If they were to get those areas back it would mean a war with the new owners of those areas, mainly England. So the "region" Germany was interested in was quite large.

Italy wanted a new "Roman Empire," which would include all of North Africa, control of the Suez Canal, and the "Near East." That involved England and France.

Japan had, as a goal, the "East Asian, Co-Prosperity Sphere," meaning they intended to control all of Asia, not just China. While their motto was "Asia for the Asians," what they really meant was Asia for Japan. That again included many nations: England, France, China, the Netherlands, the United States.

Keeping all those ambitions to a "regional conflict" was impossible. In addition the three "enemy" nations joined together in what was called the "Axis Nations." That alone meant to be at war with one, was to be at war with all. (The Soviet Union stayed out of the Asian war until the very end, but they still participated in fighting in Asia.)

Well briefly that's it. I'm sure others might add views I have missed.

Hope this is of some help. John

What conflicts are between two different religions?

The question as written is incredibly vague as "conflicts" can refer both to military engagements and philosophical quarrels. As concerns wars, there are numerous present day (and many more past) conflicts that involve people of different faiths and a subset of those are conflicts whose protagonists are fighting for reasons of faith (as opposed to faith merely being an ethnic or regional identifier). Current conflicts that involve faith-based conflicts: Israeli-Palestine: specifically Islamic Jihadists and Religious Zionists Sudan-South Sudan: specifically Janjaweed and Darfurians Jammu & Kashmir: specifically Hindu and Moslem Extremists DRC: A number of Christian Extremists vs. Animists
